{"id":273,"date":"2013-09-05T21:32:37","date_gmt":"2013-09-06T02:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=273"},"modified":"2013-10-14T20:03:24","modified_gmt":"2013-10-15T01:03:24","slug":"winter-programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=273","title":{"rendered":"Winter Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a title=\"Trail Reports\" href=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=263\">Trail Reports<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Trail Information\" href=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=265\">Trail Information<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"MN Youth Ski League\" href=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=267\" target=\"_blank\">MN Youth Ski League<br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota Youth Ski League (MYSL) is a volunteer organization that offers children between the ages of 4 and 13 and their parents the opportunity to learn, develop and enjoy cross country skiing skills together.<\/p>\n<p>The Winona MYSL club meets once a week\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0afternoons from first week in January through February. \u00a0Session length is 1 hour for younger children to 1 hour 15 min for older athletes. \u00a0The program emphasizes fun, fitness and development of basic and intermediate Nordic ski skills. \u00a0Skiers of all skill levels are welcome and athletes are grouped together based upon age and skill level. \u00a0Parents are strongly encouraged to come and participate with their children. \u00a0All instruction is done on waxless classic skis and equipment rental is available through the Winona chapter.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"SkiWERKS\" href=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=269\" target=\"_blank\">SkiWERKS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>What is Skiwerx?<\/b><br \/>\nSkiwerx is a ski program for active kids age 9-13 that love Nordic skiing and want to learn to go fast (speed, strength, endurance, flexibility). Skiwerx programs meet two times weekly mid November- early March.<\/p>\n<p><b>Highlights<\/b><br \/>\n*Session length is 1 hour 15 min.<br \/>\n*Skiwerx personalized hat<br \/>\n*Waxable classic\/skate ski rental program. WAXABLE CLASSIC AND SKATING SKIS REQUIRED.*Ski culture\/next steps\/how to become a ski racer and\/or stay active and healthy for life<br \/>\n*Waxing tutorials for parents<\/p>\n<p><b>Requirements<br \/>\n<\/b>Age 9 as of\u00a0Dec 31\u00a0and skier must have 2 years MYSL experience<br \/>\nFor dryland training, running shoes needed<br \/>\nFor on snow training, waxable classic skis (no fish scales!) and skating skis. Rentals will be available through the Winona chapter.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"WinHawk Nordic\" href=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/?page_id=271\" target=\"_blank\">WinHawk Nordic<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/logo2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-313 alignleft\" alt=\"logo2\" src=\"http:\/\/winonanordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/logo2.png\" width=\"185\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>The Winona WinHawk Nordic ski team is a varsity high school program at Winona Area Public Schools (ISD 861). Cotter and Bluffview Montesori are participating co-op schools. Athletes from grades 7-12 are provided individual instruction and team-based goals.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The ski team regularly rosters 50+ athletes and 10+ coaches. Numerous coaches with extensive personal skiing and life experience are present for every practice. Practices occur after school\u00a0Monday\u00a0through\u00a0Friday\u00a0and\u00a0Saturday\u00a0morning. \u00a0Varsity athletes are required to attend two morning weight-lifting sessions weekly.\u00a0Practices generally involve a lot of form and speed development through\u00a0hill-bounding, rollerskiing, snow skiing, and always core and stretching. The coaches and practice schedule adjust for everyone&#8217;s abilities and learning style.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The ski team owns over 50 pairs of rollerskis and 90 pair of classic\/skate skis. \u00a0No other high school program in Minnesota compares. The rollerskis are used extensively during the regular season, which runs from November to February, and also during summer rollerskiing programs, which run in June and July. \u00a0The team-owned skis and poles are available to first year skiers, outfitting them each with one pair of skate skis, one pair of classic skis and two pairs of poles. Athletes are required to purchase their own boots and clothing. \u00a0Remaining equipment is distributed to second and third year athletes as needed.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The head coach is Jason Mork. \u00a0He can be reached at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:morkjw@yahoo.com\" target=\"_blank\">morkjw@yahoo.com<\/a>.
